A little bit about Choc and Cheese

With many years of experience, passion, determination and support – Choc and Cheese is a family run business based in a small village in East Yorkshire that has been a long time in the making.

Founder Matt Clarke started his career as a chef working as a commis chef in the Hempel Hotel in London’s prestigious Lancaster Gate.

During this time he also started an NVQ in food preparation and cooking at Westminster Kingsway College.

Unfortunately, after less than a year in London, an accident left him with severe burns to the back of his hand and unable to continue to live and work in London.

He returned to his mum’s home in Chelmsford Essex while he recovered and then he started working in a local restaurant where his passion for baking and desserts started to grow.

Baking bread and desserts for the restaurant owned deli next door became a regular part of Matt’s working life and after a while he also moved from the veg section to the dessert section in the kitchen.

Fueled by his own drive and passion and under the watchful eyes of skilled and supportive head chefs, Matt continued his catering career working his way from commis chef to sous chef.

Then after a move from Essex to Yorkshire whilst working as a sous chef at what was then called the Blue Pelican restaurant in Beverley, Matt would meet Claire, the love of his life and now wife of 13 years.

What Motivates Matt?

In 2016 Matt decided that he wanted to go it alone and started a business almost over-night, baking in the local village hall where he lived and selling in a gazebo in the car park.

The support from the local community was amazing but with success came the difficulties of expansion and growth.

Still working a full time job and unable to produce the quantities required for the business to grow he was unable to maintain it and had to walk away.

Fast forward to late 2019 and Matt was ready to try again and came up with the idea for Choc & Cheese, taking everything he had learned from his previous venture and using what had been two of the most popular products back then, he developed the idea of a business that specialized in chocolate and cheese based desserts.

Just as things started to shape up, the Covid19 pandemic hit and it took just over another year until the ideas finally started to materialize into a flourishing business.

Fast forward, and with 2 full years of trading now completed Choc & Cheese continues to go from strength to strength.
With a growing number of loyal customers Matt still attends a number of markets and events including food and music festivals throughout the year.
Choc & Cheese also supplies a number of local restaurants, pubs and deli’s in the area and continues to look for more business to build a working relationship with.
